Item Needs

(Updated June 26, 2008)

Most of our families come to us with literally just the clothes on their backs. As a non-profit organization we

are always in need of NEW items for our residents.

If you would like to donate but aren't sure what we need, please feel free to Contact Us or call (703) 369-1325 and ask for Becky Goodman.

Our ongoing needs for new items are:

  • Gas Cards!! - we're desperate! These help moms while they're out looking for work or make ends meet!
  • Grocery Store Gift Cards
  • A newer-model microwave (for use in one of the resident dorms)
  • White outdoor oil-based paint (one gallon) and paint brushes
  • Frozen vegetables
  • Towel sets (towels with handtowels and washcloths)
  • Shower curtains (Rings, clear liners, vinyl curtains)
  • Twin size blankets (cotton thermals, quilts, etc.)
  • Household cleaning and laundry supplies
  • Paper products (paper towels, trash bags - 13 gallon, toilet paper, napkins, tissues, etc.)
  • Diapers, pull-ups and baby wipes and pull-ups (UPDATE: As of June 22, 2008 - Sizes 4, 5, and 6 plus sizes 2T (and up) in pullups - We have several toddlers who are all potty training!! )
  • Copy Paper (normal 8.5 x 11) and business-sized envelopes
  • Black Ink cartridges for a Lexmark Trio X1150 and a Lexmark X8350 (these are printers available for the clients  in each neighborhood).
  • Contractor-grade trash bags; 33 - 45 gallon, black (these are usually found with the regular trash bags in stores, on the bottom shelf).
  • Math workbooks (all levels up to 5th grade) and word search books for tutoring
  • Sunblock for children
  • African American hair products for adults and children (some brands include: African Pride, Organics, Dr. Miracle, Cream of Nature, Motions and Just For Me)
  • Personal products such as feminine hygiene products, razors and shaving cream
  • Pillow covers (preferably hypo-allergenic)
  • Mattress protectors (preferably waterproof and fitted)

Cleaning supplies and paper products always go the fastest and with so many little hands, anything

antibacterial is ALWAYS welcome!!

Why do we want new items? - These products are used to make up a room for a mother who is moving in. With everything crisp and new, the mom can feel better about herself.

Things We Don't Take

Any donation is more than welcome however there are many items that we cannot accept for use for

our mothers. We either don't have the resources and storage facilities or we cannot accept due to health

regulations. These items include: electronics (including computers), used bedding, used makeup

(including tester items), exercise equipment and large furniture and appliances (washing machines, dryers,

sofas, mattresses, etc.).

For your large appliances, you can always call Habitat for Humanity's Restore at (703) 369-6145.

We are not affiliated with Habitat for Humanity.

For used computers, Staples will recycle old computers and monitors for a small fee.

Contact your local Staples store for details.

Vehicle Donations

Studies have shown that for many families, having reliable transportation is the main obstacle between them

and self-sufficiency.  But let's talk reality:  A reliable vehicle means being independent, being safe and most importantly, it's a way to get to work.  It means you can go to the grocery store, the doctor, school, etc.

Here at BARN, we do not auction donated vehicles - they remain with us until they are donated to a family in need.  Here are some examples of donated cars and who is benefiting from them:

1)  A 1997 Grand Voyager van (seven seater!) - One of our clients has four small children - which means four big car seats.  Now, her kids aren't squished into a sedan!

2)  A 1987 Honda Accord - we gave it to a vehicularly challenged client with one child. The mom attends night school and works during the day.  You should see the smile on her face now that she doesn't have to ask

friends for rides.

3)  A 1997 Toyota Camry - The mom who received this vehicle worked very hard to restore her license.  Until then, she took taxies or depended on friends for rides.  When she received her license and then the vehicle, she was so happy she sat in the car for a half hour with the biggest grin on her face.

For vehicle donations, please Contact Us or call Jennifer Slusher at (703) 369-1325, ext. 10.  If you send

an email, please include both the vehicle information and your contact information.

All donations are receipted and tax deductible.
